This class is designed to allow students to explore works of famous artists and some painting techniques that relate to them. Each week we will peruse and discuss the work of one famous artist and explore their art and approach to painting (5-15 minutes on the large screen). Next we will play with this approach by planning and painting our own pieces using prompts, examples, or items supplied for still lifes.This class is fun, educational, and hands-on and is designed to build community while simultaneously developing and improving painting skills. This class can be as simple or complex as the student desires. The focus is on experimentation and learning using acrylic paints.
Students will be able to take their pieces home and/or come to an open studio time on Tuesday afternoons to work on them.
All materials will be provided as well as a schedule of artists we will learn about. The artists in this series will be Monet, Kandinsky (his earlier, colorful work), Van Gogh, (and probably Matisse and Seurat).

Instruction and guidance will be available throughout the sessions to help your vision become your work of art. Alcohol inks, 9 x 12 Alcohol ink paper, ceramic 12”x4” tiles and all needed supplies are provided, but you may also bring your own. The colors are vibrant and full of energy waiting to be sent into motion by your hand. Dress accordingly for covering clothing or bring an old apron if desired. No experience is necessary, but basic knowledge is helpful.
In this dynamic two-day workshop, you will explore ways to bring energy, movement, and expressive mark-making into your paintings. Together, we will embrace experimentation and cultivate a spirit of playful discovery. Through a series of guided exercises, you will create an expressive background. We will discuss composition and color theory. Develop your unique composition by working with a variety of water-soluble mediums and mark-making tools to expand your choices in how you approach your painting practice. We will create mood and atmosphere with oil paints.
Learn to use recycled paper to “paint” this lunar landscape. You will learn how to make pulp and then apply it to a canvas to create a beautiful picture. You can copy the example or make your own composition.
All supplies will be provided by the instructor.

Let’s dream of Spring and make some Poppies! Learn to take tissue paper, and using a simple stripping coloring method, create a gentle ombre effect, to make petals. Then use those petals to create some beautiful flowers that you can put in a vase or incorporate into an assemblage project. Open to teenagers and adults
Want to learn how to upcycle paper to make your own paper bowl? This class show you how to prep your paper, how to make the pulp, and mold it into a bowl.
All supplies will be provided and each student will leave with a minimum of two small bowls.

Quilling is the age old art of rolling, shaping and gluing paper strips to create a decorative piece of art.
In this class you will learn to create basic quilling forms, then combine them to create tiny works of art. We will complete a bouquet of flowers for a greeting card and a sunflower pin. Then you will be provided with a tag and access to some simple patterns to create a gift tag of your choice. You will also leave with an easy snowflake pattern to complete on your own.
All supplies are included.

Learn the beautiful art of calligraphy.
Once you master some simple basic marks, you will be able to choose from several different alphabets to complete a simple quote for your finished project.
Class includes calligraphy marker, practice paper, tracing paper and handouts. Sample quotes will be available for inspiration or feel free to bring your own (keep it simple)!

Create a Simple Scarf or Cowl using Larger knitting needles and Chunky Yarn.
Teen - Adult
Bring: One pair of Size 11 Knitting Needles, 2 large skeins of chunky yarn - same or related colors (read the label for needle size 9-12). Small scissors, 2 thick rubber bands.
Knit only, no pearl. Beginners will use one strand of chunky yarn, search for smooth acrylic yarn with very little added texture, flecks of color and color shifting yarns are fine. Advanced Students may bring multiple colors of thinner yarns to color mix.

Learn how to take a vintage photo and add texture and interest with hand embroidery (also called slow stitching). You will learn the techniques you need to use in order to take a skill that is traditionally done on fabric and do it on paper. No embroidery experience is necessary.

In this class you will learn some foundational stitches that can help you explore hand embroidery- running stitch, back stitch, chain stitch, lazy daisy, French knot, and satin stitch. In addition you will learn to set up your embroidery hoop and how to transfer designs. Each student will leave with their own hoop, needle, and floss so that they can continue practicing at home and start their own sampler.

You’ll take home 4 unique ornaments (2 glass, 2 plastic).

Create two one of a kind paintings on canvas using string & acrylic paints. This is a fun, but messy process, so please dress accordingly.
Paintings can be picked up the next business day during gallery hours.
All supplies to create two 8x10 paintings, disposable gloves, aprons, and a handout of materials used along with some helpful information are included.
Space is limited
This class will cover the making of earrings with posts, hoops, and marquise shapes. You will learn to make at least 4 pairs of earrings with dangles and decoration. I provide all tools, handouts, and materials. We will be working with jeweler's brass and sterling silver-filled wire to keep costs down. This is a fast-paced class so please be prompt.
Tag Journals are great alternative to large art journal. If you are strapped for time, this is a great way to start small. It can accommodate drawing, painting, or mixed media. It can also be used for affirmations, goal keeping, or collecting memorable quotes. Students will leave with as many tags as they can complete during class. All supplies will be provided.
Anna has been a practicing artist for over 30 years in many different mediums and has been teaching for 20. She is currently a member of Stella’s Art Gallery and is a Collaborative Mixed Media and Assemblage artist who creates as part of mother/daughter team.
During this class you will learn the different steps and stitches to make your own coasters and pot to continue making your own at home for any project.
Please bring: size H (5 mm) crochet hook and medium weight yarn (weight 4) in any colors for the pot, center of the coaster, stems of the flowers, and for the flowers. It can be bought at Michael’s, Hobby Lobby, or Amazon. The brand Big Twist at Michaels is a favorite of mine. Please avoid bringing any yarn that has texture or glitter since it can be difficult to use. You can bring any colors or multi colors.
I will provide: extra crochet hooks just in case, scissors, yarn needles, handouts, and pencils

Life can be loud and overwhelming. Mindfulness coloring can quiet our minds and give us a chance to focus on the moment. Science backs the benefits of this and likens the results to that of meditation. This class will give you a chance to slow down and give yourself an hour of self-care. All supplies will be provided with several different coloring mediums available. However, you are welcome to bring your own if that makes you smile. Teens and Adults welcome.
Learn how to make mini pieces of art using mixed media techniques on rescued playing cards. These are fun to do and also give you the opportunity to play with ideas on a small scale before launching into a larger piece. All supplies will be provided. Each student will leave with up to 6 cards (or as many as you can complete). Open to teenagers and adults.

About the Instructor:
Nancy Nelson-Brotz is an award-winning artist as well as an instructor. She has been teaching for many years at Rabbit Run Community Arts Association in Madison as well as being the Visual Art Director for the Ashtabula Arts Association (teaching, coordinating classes, and outreach). She has worked outreach programs at many local schools, senior centers, and camps. Her mediums include oil pastels, needle felting, and mosaics among others. She has spent years exploring and teaching many mediums of art.
Celebrate the winter season with versatile monoprint techniques on a Gelli plate to create a suite of holiday cards (whatever you celebrate). This hands-on workshop focuses on layering color, stenciling, masking, and simple collage so you can produce multiple unique cards inspired by snowy landscapes, seasonal motifs, neutral winter botanicals, and festive patterns suitable for any winter holiday. You’ll learn how to prepare the Gelli plate and select inks for clean prints, brayering fundamentals for even color and layered effects, how to use stencils and masks to create shapes, patterns, and focal images, and how to add texture with found objects, stamps, and simple mark-making.

This drop-in gelli plate studio is designed as a low-pressure, open-ended creative session — a place to break a creative slump, experiment with new techniques, revisit old ideas, or just show up and make something without expectations.
Each session offers a loose focus or prompt to spark ideas, but there’s no formal lesson and no requirement to follow along. You’re free to explore at your own pace, ask questions, share discoveries, or work quietly if that’s what you need that day.
Gelli plates, stencils, acrylic paints, and a selection of printing papers will be provided. You’re also very welcome to bring your own materials if there’s a specific technique, surface, or idea you’d like to explore.
This is a supportive, playful studio environment — suitable for beginners and experienced artists alike. Come to learn, experiment, reconnect with your creativity, or simply enjoy making art in good company.
The studio is open on the 2nd and 4th Friday of the month starting in June.
