Original painting by digital artist Tracy Zakraysek of a blue jay (Cyanocitta cristata). One of the most colorful birds of eastern/central North America, these noisy birds are one of my favorites. I love the varied hues of blue, teal and violet plumage, with the dramatic black and white bars on the tail and flight feathers. It’s a little hard to love their loud “Jay! Jay! Jay!” calls at 5 a.m., but nobody’s perfect! I’ll gladly put up with that in exchange for seeing the brilliant flash of the blue jay in flight.
