Throwing Bigger: Working with More Clay on the Pottery Wheel with Cath Smith

$175.00

Throwing Bigger: Working with More Clay on the Pottery Wheel

3-hour class + 2 open studio sessions

Includes 25 lbs of white stoneware

Maximum 2 students per session

Prerequisite: Intro to wheel throwing or comfort throwing 1–3 lbs of clay

Class times scheduled individually with the instructor after sign-up

Ready to size up your skills? This focused class is designed for potters who feel confident throwing 1–3 lbs of clay and are ready to learn how to go bigger. Whether your goal is to make larger bowls, vases, or taller forms, this session will introduce the techniques you need to start throwing with more clay—and more control.

In this 3-hour class, we’ll cover key strategies for scaling up: effective wedging, coning and centering larger amounts of clay, pulling taller walls, and using support tools like ribs and bats. You’ll work with up to 25 lbs of white stoneware, giving you plenty of material to practice with during class and in the open studio sessions for trimming and glazing.

Why take this class?

• You’ve mastered small forms and are excited to challenge yourself with

larger pieces.

• You want to improve your technique and stamina for handling more clay on

the wheel.

• You’re working toward functional ware with greater presence—like big

serving bowls, statement vases, or planters.

• You’d benefit from one-on-one guidance in a quiet, supportive setting with

just two students per session.

Throwing larger isn’t just about muscle—it’s about strategy, patience, and skill. This class will help you build the confidence and control needed to take your wheel throwing to the next level.

Throwing Multi-Part Vessels with Cath Smith

$250.00

Only a few left!

Throwing Multi-Part Vessels

Two 3-hour sessions on consecutive days + 1 open studio session for glazing

Includes 20 lbs of white stoneware

Maximum 2 students per session

Prerequisite: Students must have taken a Throwing Bigger class or be comfortable throwing 3–5 lbs of clay with a good degree of accuracy.

Class times scheduled individually with the instructor after sign-up

Take your wheel-throwing skills to the next level by learning how to create multi-part vessels—large or complex forms made by throwing and joining separate components. This 6-hour class, split across two consecutive days, is designed to teach you the essential techniques for building taller, wider, or more intricate forms than can typically be made in one piece.

Working with up to 20 lbs of white stoneware, you’ll practice throwing forms like bases, necks, collars, and stems, and learn how to successfully join them with attention to proportion, timing, and structural integrity. This class is ideal for potters who want to break out of the limits of single-throw pieces and explore more ambitious shapes such as tall vases, urns, or moon jars.

After your pieces are bisque fired, you’ll return for an open studio session to glaze and finish your work.

Why take this class?

• You’re comfortable with medium-sized forms and are ready to build bigger

or more complex vessels.

• You want to expand your creative possibilities on the wheel by learning how

to work in stages.

• You’re interested in mastering the technical skills needed for clean joins,

even walls, and strong structure.

• You want focused, one-on-one instruction in a quiet setting (max 2 students

per session).

This class offers a deeper dive into craftsmanship and planning, with plenty of time for experimentation, guidance, and skill-building. Whether you’re aiming to create statement pieces or refine your construction techniques, you’ll leave with a better understanding of how to design and throw thoughtfully in parts.

Elegant Writer poinsettia class with Tanya Hough

December 10 6-8 pm. BYOB if desired.

Painting with pen, brush, water, and watercolor pencil

Poinsettia Close-up $30

We will be drawing and painting with pen, brush, and water, (using watercolor pencils at the end). We will combine the Elegant Writer shading skills with watercolor pencil to

make a poinsettia in reds and pinks. All materials will be provided as well as

techniques that assist and allow participants to experiment and build painting skills.

First we will play with and practice several approaches before we try a finished piece

using what we have discovered. It takes some practice to figure out how to make the

ink ‘bleed’ flow the way we want it to. Once we have that mastered we will apply the

technique to the poinsettia picture provided (drawn with the special pen) creating a

background and shading with the bleed from the ink. Lastly we will use watercolor

pencils to color the flowers and leaves and then use a brush to blend.

This is very individualized and quite relaxing. You will leave with several practice

pieces and one finished poinsettia.

Radiant Pours: Creating and Pouring Glow in the Dark Paints

In this class you will learn how to create your own glow paints for acrylic pouring along with the best way to incorporate them into your pour to get optimal glow from them.

Supplies needed:

  • A stretched canvas, any size or shape you want, I used an 8inch round canvas from Hobby Lobby: https://www.hobbylobby.com/art-supplies/painting-canvas-art-surfaces/blank-canvas/round-blank-canvas/p/80867197
  • Painters tape (optional): to mask off the back edge of your canvas to keep it clean.
  • Any color/brand acrylic paint for your base coat (I used titanium white by Masters Touch)
  • Any color/brand of acrylic paint for your cell activator (I used pearlized gold by Masters Touch)
  • Swirly Pearly Glow powders by Wynn Modern Art. I used 3, but you can use as many or as few colors as you like. The 3 I used were Iced Donut, Creamscicle, and #2 in the fire opal trio set. Make sure you get the Swirly Pearly Glow powders & not the sparkling glow powders as they don’t work as good for making paints. You can use the discount code MICHELLE00142 to receive 10% off any regularly priced items on wynnmodernart.com
  • You can find the swirly pearly glow powders here: https://wynnmodernart.com/collections/swirly-pearly-glow-powders The glow powders come with a mini UV light. If you want a larger one like I have in the video you can find it on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0C85H9H2W?ref_=ppx_hzsearch_conn_dt_b_fed_asin_title_1&th=1GAC100: https://www.dickblick.com/products/golden-gac-100-primer-extender-acrylic-polymer-mediums/?fromSearch=%2Fsearch%2F%3Fsearchword%3DGAC100

M1 : https://www.homedepot.com/p/M-1-1-qt-Latex-Paint-Additive-and- Extender-70332M/206116739

  • Disposable gloves: I get mine from Amazon, but I have also seen them at Dollar General.

You will need a place where your poured painting can dry, which usually takes about 24 hours, but sometimes can take up to 48 hours. You will also need the following, which I get at Dollar Tree or Dollar General: paper towels, small cups to elevate your canvas off of your table, craft sticks (aka popsicle sticks) for mixing, small plastic cups with lids to store your glow paints in, plastic straws that bend at one end, and a table covering to protect your table from paint drips.

Wheel Throwing for Beginners – with Cath Smith 10-12 AM Mondays - Jan 12-Feb 16

$225.00

Only a few left!

If you’ve ever wanted to try wheel throwing but felt a bit intimidated, this is the class for you. We keep things small, relaxed, and genuinely supportive — no pressure, no rushing, just you, the wheel, and some very forgiving clay.

Over six weeks, each session gently builds your skills. You’ll learn the whole process step by step: how to prepare your clay so it behaves, how to center and shape your first forms, what the different drying stages mean (and how not to panic when things wobble), how to trim with confidence, and how glazing brings everything to life.

With a maximum of three students per class, you can bring a friend or family member to learn alongside you, or just enjoy the calm, personal attention without that ‘everyone is staring at my wobbly pot’ feeling.

What we’ll cover:

  • Preparing clay so it works with you
  • Centering and shaping your first bowls and cylinders
  • Understanding drying stages and successful trimming
  • Reclaiming clay and working smoothly in a shared studio
  • Glazing basics and the final firing process

This course is perfect for complete beginners or anyone returning to the wheel who wants gentle guidance and clear instruction. All materials and firing are included.

By the end, you’ll have several finished pieces — and, more importantly, the confidence to keep going on your pottery journey.

About the Teacher:

Cath Smith is a local ceramic artist who believes pottery should feel grounding, joyful, and a little bit magical. She teaches with warmth, patience, and plenty of encouragement — and she’s known for celebrating the “beautifully imperfect” first attempts that every potter makes. Her goal is simple: help you relax, learn the foundations well, and enjoy the process of making something with your hands. She can be found online at @cathsmithceramics and @theteaonpottery

About the Instructor:
